Twenty-Six Years of Turning Hope Into Healing

“When a community comes together to help one child, the impact can reach far beyond that single life, touching families, communities and generations to come.”

There are evenings when people dress up, gather for dinner, dance and celebrate, and then there are evenings when the celebration means something far greater.

On Saturday, October 10th, 2026, beneath the elegant purple glow of a transformed ballroom in Toronto, The Caribbean Children Foundation (TCCF) marked 26 years of changing lives. The 26th Anniversary Angel Gala brought together supporters, medical professionals, families and community leaders for a night filled with music, laughter and Caribbean warmth. Beneath the glamour was a story that deserved everyone’s attention.

More than 500 critically ill children from the Caribbean have received help accessing specialized medical treatment through TCCF. Behind that number are 500 families who have faced frightening diagnoses, difficult decisions and the uncertainty of not knowing whether their children would receive the care they needed.

Behind TCCF’s remarkable journey? Volunteers.

For 26 years, individuals have given their time, expertise and energy to ensure that geography and financial circumstances do not have to determine a child’s chance at a healthier future. That is no small achievement. It is what happens when compassion moves beyond good intentions and becomes organized action.

This year’s gala brought that mission into sharp focus through the story of Aida, a courageous 16-year-old from Antigua and Barbuda living with Ebstein’s anomaly, a rare congenital heart condition. Aida is preparing for her twelfth surgery at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).

A video featuring Aida and her family offered guests a glimpse into the emotional reality of their journey. It was a reminder that behind every medical procedure is a child with dreams, parents carrying enormous responsibility and a family hoping for more tomorrows.

Then came one of the evening’s most powerful moments.

Gala Chairperson Cindy Ross invited Aida to stand, representing the more than 500 children whose lives TCCF has touched. Her parents and sister followed. Medical teams from SickKids and Gift of Life International were recognized, before the entire room was invited to rise in acknowledgement of the collective generosity sustaining the foundation.

The applause was  a room full of people recognizing that changing a child’s life is rarely the work of one person.

In an especially moving moment, Aida and her mother performed Amazing Grace, expressing gratitude to the community helping make her treatment possible.

The evening also delivered tangible support. TCCF presented SickKids with a $25,000 cheque toward Aida’s treatment, adding to more than $750,000 the foundation has donated to the hospital since its inception.

Dr. Vanessa Chin, representing Gift of Life International, and Dr. Ronald Zuker, Medical Director of the SickKids International Patient Program, highlighted the importance of medical partnerships in making specialized care accessible. TCCF President Jay Brijpaul also acknowledged the supporters whose generosity has sustained the foundation’s work.

With Arvin Ross as Master of Ceremonies, the evening continued with live singers, energetic bands, steel pan and dance performances. Guests enjoyed the raffle, celebrated generously donated prizes and filled the dance floor. Yet the volunteers working behind the scenes were just as important as those enjoying the festivities.

That is perhaps the real story of TCCF. Its strength is measured by a community willing to turn concern into commitment.

As Cindy Ross expressed her gratitude, “Thank you for being the guardians of our TCCF Angels, and for giving children like Aida a chance to heal, to dream, and to grow into the future they deserve.”

Twenty-six years. More than 500 children helped. Over $750,000 donated to SickKids. The work continues.

TCCF’s next opportunity to bring the community together is its Valentine’s Dinner and Dance on February 13th 2027. For information about the foundation, upcoming events and ways to support its mission, visit www.tccfangels.com.

The measure of a community is how fiercely it shows up when someone needs help.
