In a city where food insecurity continues to challenge households and strain community resources, one downtown Toronto gathering offered a practical reminder that meaningful support begins by meeting people where they are.
On October 10th, 2026, Freedom Is a Must Foundation (FIAMF), in collaboration with Migente Cocina, hosted The Freedom Table: A Community Supper at 174 Sherbourne Street. The free, family-friendly initiative served 390 hot meals, distributed 150 take-home food kits and raised $3,060 in just under two weeks, demonstrating what community collaboration can accomplish when compassion translates into action.
The gathering brought together 20 volunteers, local businesses, donors and community members to provide more than a meal. Guests received turkey dinners, fresh pasta and home-baked cookies, alongside resource information and opportunities to connect with others.

With no registration required, the event lowered barriers for individuals and families seeking support. Meals and food kits were available while supplies lasted, reflecting the foundation’s commitment to accessible assistance delivered without judgment.
For Christophe Lewis, FIAMF’s founder and executive director, the initiative carried a deeply personal meaning. The neighbourhood surrounding the gathering was once a place he called home, bringing a connection to the community that extended beyond organizing a single event.
In announcing the initiative, Lewis emphasized the importance of compassion, consistency and ensuring underserved communities feel seen and valued.
That message speaks to a broader challenge facing community support initiatives: meeting immediate needs matters, but so does how assistance is delivered. Access, dignity and human connection can shape whether people feel welcomed into a support system or pushed to its margins.
The Freedom Table brought those principles together through a straightforward model: provide food, share useful resources and create space for community connection.
FIAMF credited Migente Cocina, volunteers, donors, local businesses and participating community members for helping make the gathering possible. The funds raised in less than two weeks also demonstrated the potential of mobilizing local support around a tangible community need.
The foundation now plans to expand its food distributions through pop-up locations in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. Working with community organizations, FIAMF intends to identify neighbourhoods where assistance is needed and build partnerships to extend its reach.

The proposed expansion creates an opportunity to bring food support closer to underserved communities while strengthening collaboration among organizations already working on the ground.
Businesses, organizations and individuals interested in contributing food, providing financial support, volunteering or partnering on future distributions are encouraged to contact the foundation.
Freedom Is a Must Foundation supports young people and individuals affected by systemic barriers and involvement with the criminal legal system. Through prevention, mentorship, advocacy, education and community initiatives, the organization works to create pathways to opportunity, support and connection.

The Freedom Table’s results offer a measurable starting point: 390 hot meals, 150 take-home food kits and 20 volunteers mobilized around a shared purpose.
The next challenge is sustaining that momentum. As FIAMF considers expansion into three cities, continued partnerships and resources will be essential to turning a successful community supper into a broader, lasting network of support.
