Retirement dreams meet harsh reality

“Getting older while being a working person sucks.”

There are days when I wonder what it would feel like to walk away from everything: financial obligations, family responsibilities, and the constant weight of worrying about tomorrow. Just for a little while. The mind can only carry so much before it begins to buckle under the pressure of endless what ifs.

If you are an older worker, you may understand exactly what I mean.

Many of us grew up believing we would retire comfortably at 55 or 60, enjoy the pension we worked so hard to earn, and finally have time to breathe. For many, that dream has quietly slipped away. We may have savings tucked aside, but spending them raises another question: What happens when they are gone?

So, we keep working.

At 66, work is about survival. Yet every day comes with uncertainty. Your employer may be encouraging retirement while allowing you to stay a little longer, but for how long? Will you earn enough to eliminate your debt before the day arrives when you no longer have a job? More importantly, if that day comes, who will hire someone your age?

Getting older changes everything.

Your body no longer springs out of bed the way it once did. What used to take seconds now takes minutes. The joints are slower, the muscles stiffer, and the mind needs time to warm up before facing another day. Add concerns about your own health, the health of loved ones, and the growing stack of bills, and restful sleep becomes increasingly difficult.

I know this sounds discouraging, but it is the reality many seniors quietly live every day. Am I complaining? Not really. I am simply wondering who else is listening.

People often say the solution is simple: pay off your debts, downsize your home, or start a business. On paper, those ideas sound reasonable. In reality, they are often much more complicated. Senior housing can be expensive. A smaller home may still consume your savings. Starting a business carries financial risks that many older adults simply cannot afford.

Some suggest turning a hobby into a source of income. That works for some people. My passions have always been writing, history, and archaeology. Unfortunately, passion does not always pay the bills. After writing hundreds of letters and articles over the years, I still wonder whether my words are valued or simply used to fill empty space on a page.

Perhaps one of the hardest parts of aging is not the physical decline but the growing awareness of loss. The older we become, the more often we say goodbye. Family members, lifelong friends, neighbours, and colleagues gradually disappear from our lives. Every funeral leaves another empty chair, another unanswered phone call, another story that will never be finished. Eventually, you begin to wonder who will be next, and when your own name will be spoken in remembrance.

No wonder those who work in hospitals, emergency services, or the clergy are often encouraged to create emotional distance. Caring deeply is both a blessing and a burden. Over time, grief has a way of changing us.

To those who are still young, cherish this season of your life. Use your energy. Chase your dreams. Spend time with the people you love. One day you may discover that youth was never really about age; it was about possibility.

Growing older may bring uncertainty, but it also brings perspective. We cannot stop time, but we can choose how we spend the moments we still have. That, perhaps, is the one freedom that never truly retires.

Long live the Light, Love, and Life. Their value only becomes clearer with age.
