Cognitive Debt; What you Need to Know

“The words were produced, but they never entered a mind.”

Let me talk to you like family, because what MIT just found; well I will just share the news and let you think through it.

Over four months, researchers watched students write essays three ways: with ChatGPT, with a search engine, and with nothing but their own brains. The result? The brain-only group lit up like a festival: strong, wide, alive. Search users? Somewhere in the middle. The AI group? Their neural connectivity went quiet.

Here is the part that should make you pause; 83% of AI users could not quote a single sentence from the essay they had just finished. Not one. The words were on the page, but they never lived in the mind.

This is what the researchers call Cognitive Debt. Like borrowing money, you cannot pay back. You get the essay done fast, but you lose the thinking, the memory, the ownership, and the bill comes due later, in shallow recall, in weaker skills, in a mind that’s forgotten how to think.

Now, I am not here to shame you. AI is a tool. A powerful one, but tools have weight. When we outsource the struggle, we outsource the growth. The friction of figuring it out yourself. That is where the learning lives.

So, what do we do? We do not burn the tool. We learn to hold it right. Use AI as a partner, not a replacement. Draft your own first. Think your own thoughts. Then let the machine polish, not produce. When you write from your own mind, your brain stays loud, alive, and yours.

It is about being pro-mind. It is about remembering that the public is irrational, yes, but we can guide them back to themselves. We can write to heal divisions, not just report them.

If you take nothing else from this, take this: the next time you sit to write, let your brain lead. Let the words come from you. When the words enter your mind, they stay, and when they stay, you do too.
