They Called Me Family First

“They didn’t just give me a platform…” Simone Jennifer Smith, Chief Communication Officer, TCN Now

The first time someone from TCN told me I belonged; I didn’t believe them.

I had been burned before by rooms that called themselves community and then quietly shut the door. I had stories to tell and nowhere safe to tell them. I had a voice that felt too loud for some spaces and not polished enough for others. I was standing at that particular crossroads that many of us know, the one where your gifts feel like a burden because no one around you is ready to receive them.

Then TCN found me. Or maybe I found them. Either way, something shifted.

That was eleven years ago.

What they offered me was an invitation. Come in. We are building something. We need your voice, and from that first day, they meant it. There were moments, stretches of time, really when I felt unseen even inside this family. Moments when the weight of the work pressed down harder than any support could hold. When I wondered if what I was pouring into the community was being received at all. Those moments are real. They are part of every story of purpose that anyone tells you, if they are telling it honestly.

Every time I got close to walking away, TCN pulled me back with the reminder that embedded inside every story I wrote was someone who needed to see themselves in print. Someone who needed to know their neighbourhood, their culture, their people, were worth reporting on. That they were worth reporting on.

That is a harder thing to walk away from than a paycheque.

Then came 2020.

The pandemic tested the infrastructure of every community institution that depended on foot traffic, on handshakes, on the physical gathering of people. Newspapers around the world folded. Media organizations that had been operating for decades went dark overnight.

TCN survived. Not just survived; transformed.

We became the first Caribbean digital TV network in Canada. My TCN TV Network was the evolution we had been building toward without fully knowing it. The pandemic compressed a decade of digital transition into eighteen months and forced us to bet on ourselves at the exact moment the world felt most uncertain.

We bet right.

Behind that bet were the people who make this organization something the media industry doesn’t have a category for yet, our volunteer writers. Dozens of them. Some of the most dedicated storytellers you will never see on a mainstream masthead. They showed up, deadline after deadline, because they believed that Caribbean Canadian stories deserve the same rigour, the same care, and the same front-page energy as any story in any outlet in this country.

Then there are our community investors: the businesses, the event organizers, the nonprofits, the families who trusted us to carry their celebrations and their losses with equal dignity. They are co-authors of this platform.

Today, Toronto Caribbean News steps into the next chapter as TCN Now.

The name carries its weight intentionally. Now means we are no longer waiting for mainstream media to decide our stories matter. Now means we are not asking for a seat at a table built without us;  we are building a table that seats everyone who has ever been told their culture is a niche. Now means print, digital, video, audio, and social media, woven into a single Caribbean Canadian media platform that moves at the speed of the community it serves.

This is an organization that started as a newspaper and grew into a movement choosing to name itself honestly for the first time.

For over 15 years, TCN has been in the business of telling the truth about who we are and what we are building. The platforms are expanding. The commitment is unchanged.

They called me family when I had nowhere to belong.

Now we’re building something worth belonging to together.
