The Ebony Youth Leadership Program has made a measurable difference in the lives of young Black youth since its launch. Rebranded as the Ebony Youth Gavel Club, the initiative completed a successful inaugural cycle that culminated in June 2026. It is supported by the United Achievers’ Club (UAC), a non-profit organization operating since 1980. Through its programs and services, UAC has distinguished itself by remaining active across many areas of community life in Peel Region.

This youth leadership initiative sets specific learning goals that each participant acquires through involvement. Its motto “Growing Leaders Together” aims to maximize “One Community. Many Voices. Unlimited Potential.” That affirmation reflects a clear mission and vision centered on inclusion and capacity-building.

Toastmasters International describes Gavel Clubs as “A way of promoting the Toastmasters experience to groups who may be ineligible for regular membership due to age, or other circumstances.” Two requirements govern formation: the group must not be eligible to charter as a regular Toastmasters club, and it must include members under 18.

Promotional materials describe the Ebony Youth Gavel Club as a supportive environment where youth learn public speaking, leadership, teamwork, and self-confidence while building meaningful connections with peers. Participants are expected to:

  • Build confidence: Find your voice. Believe in yourself.
  • Develop leadership: Lead with purpose. Inspire others.
  • Work together: Stronger together. Better together.
  • Learn and grow: New skills. Bright futures.

Feedback from the inaugural cohort was overwhelmingly positive. One youth said, “I learned how not to look nervous while speaking and how to have more confidence.” Another noted, “I wish we had more activities where we could interact with each other.” A third added, “I liked the snacks, and the support I got while I was there.”

The program restarts Saturday, September 19th, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Mahogany Place, 7820 McLaughlin Road South, near Steeles Road and McLaughlin Road in Brampton. Meetings run weekly from September 2026 to June 2027, except on statutory holidays. The fee is $80 for the full year, payable at registration.

The positive impact on Black youth was evident at the final session in June 2026. Conversations about the use of artificial intelligence in the classroom drew active engagement, perceptive interaction, and sustained involvement. Participants demonstrated stronger communication skills, greater confidence, and emerging leadership capacities, assets that prepare them for future success and enable them to make a positive difference in their lives and communities.
