Actions have repercussions; Father defends daughter’s honour

Growing up, one thing we were always taught was that every choice we make comes with consequences. While some consequences may feel like a slap on the wrist, others may come at a very hefty price.

Malik Chandler, an Ohio father, is being praised online for defending his 11-year-old daughter’s honour after shooting her alleged rapist after becoming aware of what had happened to her.

It all started on July 15^th, 2026, when the girl’s mother called 911 after coming across a video on her daughter’s phone that showed her being sexually assaulted in their home. The next day, prosecutors said Chandler lured the suspect, Diego Montoya Gonzalez, to their home through TikTok by pretending to be his daughter. The girl’s father intended to beat the suspect and inform the police of Montoya Gonzalez’s crime afterwards, but things took a different turn.

Chandler believed he saw Montoya Gonzalez reach for a weapon, prompting him to reach for his own gun and open fire first, shooting the suspect twice.

Police arrived at the scene to find Montoya Gonzalez sitting on a chair with two gunshot wounds before transporting him to Grant Medical Centre in Columbus, Ohio. Montoya Gonzalez, who survived, was indicted on five counts of pandering sexually oriented material involving a minor, two counts of rape and one count of obstructing official business. Prosecutors also allegedly found several disturbing videos on Montoya Gonzalez’s phone of children, including either an infant or a toddler, being sexually abused.

While some consequences may feel like a slap on the wrist, others may come at a very hefty price.

A Franklin judge set a $20,000 recognizance bond and a $50,000 cash bond. If released from police custody, Montoya Gonzalez has been ordered to have no contact with the 11-year-old girl and her family and is barred from using the internet unless it is for work purposes.

Chandler is also looking at facing charges. He was charged with a felony assault, and his bond was set at $10,000. He has since been released from custody. In an exclusive interview with the New York Post, it was revealed that Chandler is already a felon following a conviction for felony burglary from when he was a minor in 2010. If convicted, he could serve up to 18 years in prison.

While I am not someone who condones gun violence, I do believe people should be allowed to defend themselves and their loved ones. A parent would surely see red if they were to hear that their child has been victimized. What Chandler did shows he will do whatever it takes to protect his family, and I do not believe he should face any charges for that. We all matter to someone, and a lot of us have at least one relative who will defend our honour.

I hope this case will make people realize that their actions can backfire on them.

Although it has been proven that the girl has a family who will protect her at all costs, what she went through is traumatizing. Even if she does receive help, she may never get over what she endured.

Another note is that if Montoya Gonzalez is convicted, he may face more repercussions while serving his sentence. We all know child predators face severe stigma and are at substantial risk for violence in prison by other inmates because victimizing a child is highly frowned upon in the prison hierarchy.
