Country music legend Dolly Parton passed away on August 25th, 2026, at the age of eighty. While her almost six-decade career as a country superstar is what she is most known for, her philanthropic work across various avenues is also outstanding. Believing in the goodness of people, Parton maintains a special place in the hearts of many within the Black community.
Throughout her career, Parton has always been an ally to the Black community. She has demonstrated a deep respect and solidarity through financial investments, public support for civil rights and musical collaborations. Here is a look at some of her contributions that help make up her spectacular legacy.
While the 1992 pop-ballad version of “I Will Always Love You” by the late Whitney Houston for the 1992 film The Bodyguard is the most well-known version of the song, Parton sang the original version in 1974. Throughout the years, Parton has expressed in interviews that she was honoured by Houston’s version of the song. Instead of keeping all the royalties she received from the 1992 version to herself, Parton used a portion of the almost $10 million she received to invest in an office complex in a predominantly Black community in Nashville in honour of Houston, dubbing it the “House Whitey built.”
In 2018, Parton wanted to reflect the right side of history by changing the name of her Pigeon Ford, Tennessee dinner show from “Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede” to “Dolly Parton’s Stampede” in an effort to separate her business from the racist significance of the word “Dixie,” which, according to historians, has ties to the Confederacy and the calamity of enslavement.
The 2020 death of George Floyd led to a reckoning that sparked a massive global movement against systemic racism and police brutality. Although Parton did not attend any street marches, she understood why they were being held and supported people’s rights to be heard and seen. Almost three months after Floyd’s death, Parton showed solidarity in an interview with Billboard, making it clear that it is not just a select group of people who matter. “Of course, Black Lives matter. Do we think our little White a**** are the only ones who matter? No,” said Parton.
In 2024, when it was announced that Beyoncé would be releasing Cowboy Carter, a country album, the singer received a lot of online backlash. People even went as far as to say she does not fit the genre, not realizing that country is one of many genres that are rooted in Black culture. Parton supported Beyoncé’s transition into the country genre, shared her excitement for the release of the country album and congratulated Beyoncé for being the first Black woman to top the Hot Country Songs Chart with the album’s first single, “Texas Hold’Em.”
The support did not end with Parton sending her best wishes to Beyoncé. Along with praising Beyoncé for covering her classic hit “Jolene,” Parton is featured in two songs on the 2024 album, “Dolly P,” an interlude to the Jolene cover, and “Tyrant.”
While Parton will be remembered for having a phenomenal music career, what I also find phenomenal about her is that she was someone who always knew how to read the room; she was genuinely passionate about believing in the good in people and being an ally to the Black community and many more.
