Introducing Invest with T: start with the questions

You do need curiosity, care, and a willingness to check the facts before you act.

One of the most important conversations I have with a property investor often starts with a simple page of numbers.

The rent looks good at first. Then we review what that rent must cover: the mortgage payment, property tax, insurance, utilities, repairs, upkeep, and the months when a tenant may move out. By the end of the review, the question has changed. It is no longer only, “How much rent can this property bring in?” It is, “Will the income cover the full cost of owning it?”

That distinction can shape an investment decision.

My name is Tyrone Steer. I work with people buying, selling, renting, and assessing residential and small income properties in the Greater Toronto Area.

My work brings me close to the questions people face when money, housing, and long-term plans meet. A first-time buyer may weigh a home against a changing payment. A property owner may test whether rental income covers the full cost of ownership. A self-directed investor may study a stock chart and ask whether a move has strength behind it or whether risk is rising.

Those moments have shaped how I think about investing. The goal is not to find a sure thing. It is to understand the facts, test the plan, and leave room for risk. I hope to do that here with you in this column.

In Invest with T, we will look at investing, stock investing, and a little bit of real estate in plain language. We will look at technical analysis, a way investors study price charts to assess trends, momentum, and possible risk points. We will also cover the numbers behind rental property: rent, operating costs, cash flow, financing, vacancy, and the return on the money invested.

Neither field offers certainty. A property takes time and money to buy, maintain, and sell. It may involve tenants, repairs, and months when income does not arrive as planned. Stocks can trade in seconds, but fast access does not remove risk. A chart records what has happened; it does not guarantee what will happen next.

Real estate and stocks may both form part of an investment plan, but they carry different costs, time demands, and risks. This column will help you to keep those differences clear.

My goal is simple: I will make the numbers easier to understand without making the decisions sound easier than they are. We will look past sales claims and headline excitement. We will ask what a number includes, what it leaves out, and what could change the outcome.

This column is for people building their first foundation, owners of small rental properties, self-directed investors studying charts, and readers who want to make more sense of the choices in front of them. You do not need to know every term before you begin. You do need curiosity, care, and a willingness to check the facts before you act.

I look forward to working through those questions with you.
