StyleWand is rethinking the modern wardrobe

We have all done it, stood in front of a closet full of clothes, looked at everything hanging in front of us and decided that we have nothing to wear. What if the problem is not our wardrobe? What if we simply don’t have a clear picture of what is already there?

That is the idea behind StyleWand, a fashion technology platform that caught my attention during African Fashion Week Toronto this past season. At first, I was drawn to the beautiful designs presented on the runway, designed by StyleWand Co-Founder and CEO Uju Obinwa herself. Once I learned more about the concept behind the brand, the story became even more interesting.

StyleWand approaches the wardrobe not simply as a collection of clothes, but as a system. “The problem is often not that people need more clothes,” Obinwa explains. “It is that they do not have a clear picture of what they already own, what works together, what they actually wear, or what is missing.”

How many pieces are sitting somewhere in your closet that you have completely forgotten about? How often do we buy something only to realize we already own something similar? StyleWand helps to solve this problem. Users photograph or upload pieces they already own, creating an organized digital view of their wardrobe. From there, the platform helps them explore different outfit combinations and understand what they have before automatically deciding they need something new.

“We want the wardrobe to become more useful, not just bigger,” says Obinwa.

The idea is not to tell people to stop shopping. This is fashion, after all, and shopping and discovering something new can be part of the fun. Instead, StyleWand is encouraging us to be more intentional about what we buy and to use what we already own.

“Before asking people to completely change the way they shop, there is a simpler question: are we making the most of the clothes we already own?” Pieces that really are no longer being worn can also be given another life through Luxe Loop, StyleWand’s resale marketplace, where users can list clothing directly from their digital wardrobe.

Behind the technology is a team that brings together fashion, business, technology and design. Obinwa, who is also a lawyer, previously built Nigerian fashion brand House of Tarati and continues to design. Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer Faith Ojeiku brings experience in product strategy and developing technology platforms used by millions, while Co-Founder and Chief Design Officer Chen Emechete is a former Senior Product Designer at Meta whose background spans technology, AI and design. Together, they are developing what they call a “Wardrobe Operating System.” It sounds very techy, but the intention is the opposite. “We do not want StyleWand to feel like technology for the sake of technology,” Obinwa explains. “We want the technology to work quietly in the background while the user experiences something that feels intuitive and personal.”

The brand sits between fashion and technology, so being part of AFWT meant something bigger. It gave the brand an opportunity to use fashion to create visibility and introduce more people to the StyleWand concept. “African and diaspora creatives should not only participate in fashion,” she says. “We should also have a voice in how the technology around fashion is being built and shaped.” Perhaps that is what makes StyleWand such an interesting concept.

When talking about the future of fashion, it usually means looking for what is coming next. The next collection. The next trend. The next thing we think we need. StyleWand is asking us to look somewhere else first, inside our own closets. Next time we stand in front of our wardrobe thinking, “I have nothing to wear,” instead of thinking “What should I buy next,” let us get creative with what we already own. Think about quality over quantity and shop with more intention.
