Roads, parks, public transit, emergency services, recreation, libraries…if even one of these services matters to you, your vote counts. This is the central message in a compelling new video, “It Counts. You Count.” released by the City of Brampton, urging eligible voters to come out and vote in the Municipal Election on October 22, 2018.
“People are connected to their City services and programs much more than they know. Voting is an impactful way to make their voices heard in their local government,” said Peter Fay, City Clerk and Returning Officer for the 2018 Brampton Municipal Election. Some of the City services and programs used last year include 1.2 million transit rides by seniors and 3.4 million rides by youth; 124,900 registrations in children’s recreation programs; 4 million items borrowed from Brampton Library; and 24,320 emergency calls attended to by Brampton Fire and Emergency Services.
“When you vote for your Mayor, Councillor and School Board Trustee, you are entrusting them to make decisions on things that matter to you every day. That’s why you should vote,” added Fay.
Data shows that youth voter turnout has been the lowest, at around 21 per cent, in comparison to other age groups. More information is available in this data story.
Where previously voters were given a designated location to vote, this Election, the City of Brampton has introduced “Vote Anywhere in Your Ward”, providing people with a choice of 10-15 voting locations within the ward in which they reside. An interactive map on the City website helps you find your place of choice to vote. “As you run errands, head to or return from your place of work, study, play or worship – take a few minutes to vote. This can go a long way in shaping the future of Brampton,” added Fay.
