The Poetic Word

Black Women’s Tears

“As if being a black woman is to be born as anything less than as a human.”

Was told that a black woman

Should not cry.

A sign for weakness that is a taboo in

This world, this age of time.

Was told that the tears trickling down

The cheeks of a melanated Nubian

Ancestry were crocodile tears.

As though everyone forgot the importance

Of civilization didn’t emerge and develop

From the crocodiles lurking in

Life giving waters of the mighty Nile.

Was told a black woman’s tears was

Crying out wolf.

As if other nations did not bring Destruction of empires with their lust,

Labeled as damsels in distress,

Bringing their knights in shining armour

To early demise,

Call it work hazards.

As if being a black woman is to be born

As anything less than as a human.

Being disrespected and mistreated,

But plead on bloody knees

When the final look before turning away

From the flames, ignited by

A tired black woman.

Labelled as angry black woman,

But the tears of black women are dismissed.

But when it’s too late,

The tears are finally understood as

Amazing Grace.
