On Monday September 21st, 2026, the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority, in partnership with the Consulate General of Saint Lucia in Toronto invited the Toronto Caribbean Newspaper team to attend a Saint Lucia Diaspora evening with the Minister of Tourism, the Honourable Dr. Ernest Hilaire.
This intimate gathering offered an opportunity to connect directly with the Minister and gain insights into Saint Lucia’s plans for the year ahead.
Sitting in that room brought me back to my first breath of St. Lucia air as it hit like a revelation: warm, alive with the scent of tropical blooms, salt, and something ancient carried on the trade winds. It was a greeting that whispered of more than just paradise, hinting at layers waiting to be uncovered beneath the postcard-perfect surface.
Descending into Hewanorra International Airport, the transition from Canadian chill to Caribbean embrace is immediate. Yet it is not until the next morning, watching fishermen mend nets at dawn in Vieux Fort, that the island’s true rhythm reveals itself; the steady heartbeat of a people who have learned to live between mountain and sea, between hurricane seasons and harvests.

“The sea remembers what we’ve forgotten,” says local historian Marcus Baptiste, tracing patterns in the sand with a weathered finger. His words gain meaning when I discover St. Lucia’s newest treasure: the “Below St. Lucia” underwater sculpture corridor. This is a cultural reclamation, a narrative told through art that visitors can literally swim through. I have heard of underwater lovers snorkeling through the installations near Canaries. The sculptures (depicting St. Lucian historical figures, cultural symbols, and marine life) transform curiosities into storytellers. “We are letting our stories live in the element that has shaped us most, “ Baptiste explains.
The Pitons rise like ancient sentinels, impossible to ignore yet impossible to fully comprehend. Hiking Gros Piton with guide Marie-Claire, a woman whose family has lived in the shadow of these volcanic giants for generations, reveals more than geological formations. “The mountain teaches patience,” she says, pausing to catch her breath. “It doesn’t rush, yet it stands taller than anything.” At the summit, the panorama unfolds; a perspective that makes sense of the island’s geography, history, and people’s relationship with their dramatic home.

Rodney Bay pulses with energy during Carnival, but the authentic rhythm emerges on Friday nights in Gros Islet, where the street party transforms from tourist spectacle to community gathering. “We welcome visitors,” says local musician Jean-Claude, adjusting his steel pan, “This is our home, our celebration.” The distinction matters. Here, luxury is found in the shared experience of music, food, and laughter that transcends transactional tourism.
In Soufrière, the drive-in volcano offers s a visceral connection to the island’s fiery creation. The sulfuric air, the steaming pools, the mineral-rich waters that stain Diamond Falls in rainbow hues, this is St. Lucia’s raw power, unpolished and undeniably real. “We live with the volcano’s breath,” says a local spa owner. “It reminds us that creation is always happening.”

As my journey concluded with a final sunset over the Caribbean, I understand what makes St. Lucia different. It’s not just the beauty that seduces, but the depth that sustains. The luxury here is what can be felt; the weight of history, the warmth of community, the quiet understanding that some places are destinations, while others are homes that graciously welcome visitors into their stories.
